First Time At UWM's Open Friday Night Figure Drawing?

First time, that might be, but did you know that UWM's drawing session is considered to be the oldest running figure drawing class in Milwaukee. The location and the number of models has changed over the years and again recently, but it has always drawn a faithful crowd of enthusiastic artists.

A few years ago the session moderator would have a pot of hot chocolate. If the new moderator, Mario, keeps that up we will see, but there are plenty of great things that have been happening. In 2011 & 2012 the sessions were held in the larger art building on the corner, Mitchell Hall. Mario worked really hard to get two models for every session where he ran a room of short poses and a separate room for long poses. This was a huge advantage for UWM, but because of the lack of attendance it was scaled back to its original size.

Overall UWM has a great history of energetic models who have helped define a new program. With a more adventurous admin behind the scenes it is much easier for models with little or no experience. For seasoned artists it is a delight to draw new models. If your interested in modeling there is more information on the UWM Friday Night Figure Drawing Facebook page listed below.

Class Details:

  • Poses start at 7pm. The room is smaller and hard to find, get there 10-15 minutes early.
  • The drawing room is on the 4rd floor in the art building next to the union. Yes there is an elevator in the middle of each floor.
  • Starting with gesture poses and slowly building to longer poses.
  • General Admission: $8 | Buy in Bulk for a better rate.
  • Stadium style seating.
  • Mostly drawing horses, don't be afraid to get down in front.

  • Models are generally newer to modeling.
  • Poses will be simpler and shorter.

Location Details:

  • Parking can be tricky on the Eastside. Read all parking signs.
  • Consider parking in a metered spot. Pay the meter if you arrive early.
  • The building doors lock around 8pm. Please avoid wedging the door open, this creates a safety concern.
  • Stay out of the class rooms. Late classes may still be running.
